The Hidden Cost of HydroPower

Renewable Energy No Comments »

Please show some love and like&share this video 🙂

In the age of the Climate Crisis, hydro-electric power plants are a great source of clean energy and financial benefits. This is particularly true in developing areas which lack natural resources. As these facilities expand at an ever larger scale their externalities are becoming more and more visible.

Hydroelectric power, also known as hydropower, is a form of renewable energy that utilizes the gravitational force of flowing or falling water to generate electricity. It is one of the oldest and most widely used sources of renewable energy.

Hydroelectric power is a clean and renewable energy source because water is continually replenished by natural processes, such as rainfall and snowmelt. It is a reliable source of electricity, providing a constant and predictable power supply.

Additionally, hydroelectric power plants produce no direct greenhouse gas emissions during operation, making them an environmentally friendly option for meeting electricity demand. However, the construction of large dams and reservoirs can have significant environmental and social impacts, and smaller-scale run-of-river or micro-hydropower systems are alternative options that minimize these impacts.

Biofuel instead of coal and oil – How promising are these renewable resources? | DW Documentary

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Can our petroleum-based market economy make the switch to renewable resources? According to scientists, politicians and industrial leaders, a “biobased economy” is a sustainable alternative. What lies behind this optimism?

The biobased economy promises to help solve some of the world’s biggest problems, including climate change, species extinction, pesticide residues and depleted soil. It foresees plants, fungi and insects replacing environmentally unfriendly coal and petroleum as raw materials, and microorganisms being used to produce chemicals.

But even these renewable resources require a production process, and that harbors new potential dangers. These include land appropriation, the destruction of already dwindling natural ecosystems, and the exploitation of nature for profit to an ever-greater extent. This documentary examines the economic cycle as a whole, from the production of biomass to processing and finished products.

Renewable Energy to Save the Planet? A Soho Forum Debate

Texas A&M University’s Andrew Dessler vs. Steven Koonin, former undersecretary for science at the Department of Energy, at the Soho Forum.

Do We Need to Rapidly Convert to Renewables To Save the Planet? A Soho Forum Debate

Does the world need to rapidly convert to using renewable energy to save the planet from global warming? That was the topic of a Soho Forum debate held at the Sheen Center in New York City on Monday, August 15, 2022.

Andrew Dessler, the director of the Texas Center for Climate Studies at Texas A&M University, argued that fossil fuels are endangering life on the planet by causing global warming through greenhouse gas emissions. He contended that solar and wind represent safe, reliable, and cost-effective means to decarbonize the electric grid.

Steven Koonin, who served as undersecretary for science at the Department of Energy during the Obama administration and is the founding director of New York University’s Center for Urban Science and Progress, argued that making large and rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions aren’t necessary to protect the earth. He also contended that doing so isn’t cost-effective and that it’s immoral. Koonin is also the author of Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, and Why It Matters.

The debate was moderated by Soho Forum Director Gene Epstein.
