Energy 101 | Biofuels

Biomass is an organic renewable energy source that includes materials such as agriculture and forest residues, energy crops, and algae. Scientists and engineers at the U.S. Department of Energy and its national laboratories are finding new, more efficient ways to convert biomass into biofuels that can take the place of conventional fuels like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. This edition of Energy 101 shows how biomass is broken down and refined into sustainable biofuels via biochemical and thermochemical processes.

Iceland and geothermal energy

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Iceland has harnessed the potential of geothermal energy, heating 90% of its houses and producing 30% of its electricity with geothermal. Geothermal energy is very important in Iceland that relies 100% on renewables for both electricity and house heating. The cascading use of geothermal was also pioneered in Iceland and has created new industries in Iceland through the circular economy mindset of making the most of each resource. Icelandic expertise in geothermal is also a valuable export product.

Aeromine Rooftop Wind. Static. Silent. 50% more power than Solar PV. What's not to like?

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Rooftop wind power has been a goal for micro power generators around the world for many years now. There’s no shortage of design ideas, but now there’s a new kid on the block that has no visible moving parts, makes no noise, and generates 50% more power than standard solar PV panels. So how do they do that?

Is Geothermal Heating & Cooling Worth It? It’s been 4 years since I installed my DIY Geothermal System, and with some experience with it, I can firmly say it was worth every penny. It may not be the perfect system for every application, but it is perfect for mine. My average monthly electric bill is only 0 per month for a 6000 square foot house. I think that speaks volumes itself.

Why wave power isn't everywhere (yet)

Alternative Energy No Comments »

The oceans, that cover most of the planet, are full of energy. So much, in fact, that if we could harness that of all the waves, we’d fulfill global demand three times over. There’s just one small problem: No one has figured out exactly how to make this work long-term. But we could be on the cusp of sea change.

We’re destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn’t need to be this way. Our channel explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we’ll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

Is offshore wind the energy of the future?

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Offshore wind farms solve one of renewable energy’s biggest problems: unreliability. With wind almost always blowing on sea, there is no lack of power. But the technology is struggling with a bunch of other hurdles.

We’re destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn’t need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we’ll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.
