Data centers provide mission-critical computing functions vital to the daily operation of top U.S. economic, scientific, and technological organizations. These data centers consume large amounts of energy to run and maintain their computer systems, servers, and associated high-performance components—up to 3% of all U.S. electricity powers data centers. And as more information comes online, data centers will consume even more energy.

Data centers can become more energy efficient by incorporating features like power-saving “stand-by” modes, energy monitoring software, and efficient cooling systems instead of energy-intensive air conditioners. These and other efficiency improvements to data centers can produce significant energy savings, reduce the load on the electric grid, and help protect the nation by increasing the reliability of critical computer operations.

Energy efficiency and energy savings: a view from the building sector

Energy Efficiency No Comments »

The GBPN has just released a report entitled “Energy efficiency and energy savings: a view from the building sector” commissioned to the Economist Intelligence Unit. The survey explores how real estate and construction executives in the European Union, India, China and the USA approach energy efficiency regulation in their business.

The report highlights that businesses, motivated by the potential for cost cutting, are embracing energy efficiency.

Given the fact that buildings account for about a third of total energy use worldwide and of energy related CO2 emissions, the research suggests that business leaders are ready to go deep and are waiting for the right policy signals that can scale up energy efficiency in the sector.

Our products here at Select Blinds are certain to help in regards to your money saving ventures when it comes to your energy efficiency. We offer products specifically made to aid in lowering your electric bill. Watch the video to learn more!

Video Transcript:
Creating and maintaining an energy-efficient home means saving money while having a more comfortable home. And the easiest way to increase your home’s energy efficiency is to upgrade your window coverings. The right window coverings will provide better window insulation, keeping the cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer out of your home. This means you use less energy and ultimately save on energy costs. Here are some of your options:

Shutters and Venetian blinds give you great light control, which helps with energy efficiency. Lighter colored blinds with closed slats will reflect the heat gain by about 45%, according to the Department of Energy. This is ideal for those wanting a timeless look with the modern benefits of energy efficiency.

Cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, have tiny cells that trap unwanted air, temperature, and even noise. For even more energy efficiency, choose double cells. Blackout cell shades provide the best insulation because they block outside light, keeping your home’s interior comfortable.

The majority of your shades, including roller, sheer, and pleated shades, come in a variety of colors, and they’re available in both light filtering and room darkening fabrics. Light filtering shades help to minimize the harshness of the sun by diffusing the light and giving your space a soft glow. Room darkening and blackout shades prevent the most light from coming into your home. Some of our shades even have the option of a privacy or blackout liner, so you can get the look you want with the energy efficiency you need.

Energy Efficient Homes: Scott Bergford at TEDxTheEvergreenStateCollege

Energy Efficiency No Comments »

Scott Bergford has spent his entire home building career searching for the balance between energy efficiency and affordability. For nearly 30 years, Scott has worked to build homes that exceed building codes and use little energy to run. He also now retrofits existing homes for greater energy efficiency. Scott feels there is inestimable value in collaboration between new discoveries and proven “traditional” building technologies. Today Scott’s homes are certified to the highest ranking of Built Green ® and Energy Star. Scott Homes is one of the few builders in the nation to achieve “Emerald” certification from NAHB Green program.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
