The paradox of energy efficiency

Energy Efficiency No Comments »

Increasing energy efficiency helps to use resources more economically. But what if greater efficiency in a complex system actually uses up more energy resources overall? This video explains this paradox of energy efficiency, also known as Jevons Paradox.

In this video, you will learn this model answer:

A device is useful because the device can transfer energy from one useful energy store to another useful energy store.

However no device is 100% efficient. This is because the device will transfer energy to non-useful energy stores.

The energy that isn’t transferred to a useful energy store is called wasted energy, or dissipated energy. The useless energy stores are usually thermal energy stores of the surroundings.

The higher the efficiency of a device the less energy is being transferred to the useless surrounding energy stores

The equation for the efficiency of an energy transfer in terms of power is:

efficiency = useful output power transfer ÷ total input power transfer
. .

Rearrange the equation for the useful output energy transfer in terms of power is:

useful output power transfer = efficiency x total input power transfer

Rearrange the equation for the total input energy transfer in terms of power is:

total input power transfer = efficiency x useful output power transfer

Energy Efficiency 101

Energy efficiency is measured as the ratio of energy output to energy input, as a percentage. The goal of improving energy efficiency is to deliver the same service to the end user, using less energy. Learn more about energy efficiency at www.studentenergy.org

Thank you to the Alberta Real Estate Foundation for sponsoring this episode of the Energy Systems Map.

Energy Efficiency in 90 seconds

When most people talk about “clean energy,” they often mean wind or solar power, and when they’re discussing “energy conservation,” they’re usually talking about doing things like remembering to turn off the lights. But energy conservation, sometimes called energy efficiency, IS clean energy just like solar and wind. It’s also cheaper than fossil fuels and doesn’t create pollution.

Building Energy Efficiency | This Old House

Richard Trethewey checks out an Idea House in development and learns about energy efficiency building techniques.

Richard Trethewey goes to Devens, MA to visit a new house with advance building techniques. He meets builder Dan Gainsboro who says the entire heating season will only cost 00 or less for this new house—considerably lower than what our homeowners were paying to heat their house. He shows Richard how the houses in the development are built using 2×6 walls with insulated panel sheathing for a water and air-tight shield. Walls are insulated on the inside and the window openings are wrapped with flashing tape and even the headers are insulated. They used triple glazed windows throughout. The finished Idea House is a lovely small scale home with an open floor plan. The light fixtures use LEDs and the appliances are all Energy Star rated. In the well-insulated basement, there’s no mechanical room because mini-split heat pumps are used to heat and cool the entire house. And finally, Dan shows Richard the solar panels on the south facing roof of the garage. On a sunny day, the panels generate enough electricity to power the house for a family of four.

You may have been told that you cannot create or destroy energy, but we certainly use it – and pay for it, so what does get used up?

See our video https://youtu.be/Um04eHOqGlM where we explained that it is the usefulness of the energy that gets used as the energy is dissipated as waste heat.

Inside an energy efficiency scam — capacitors don't save energy

Inside an energy efficiency scam -- capacitors don't save energy

You can find “energy saving” devices on the market that are little more than a capacitor that is wired across the ac lines. In this demonstration shot at Eaton Corp.’s Power Systems Experience Center, Dan Carnovale explains how measurements made with these devices installed can give misleading readings that imply energy savings where none really exist. Most often, unsuspecting victims get fooled by looking at read-outs of watts instead of a read-out of volt-amps.
