If 34 billion dollars in capital investment would provide for the energy needs of 6 million people almost pollutant free, would you do it? That’s the question Denmark – population a touch under that 6 million – is currently answering with a resounding yes.
Green energy, as we all know, is looking likely to be one of the keys to humanity’s future. If it’s successful, it will represent a societal change with implications for the whole planet. While recycling your bottles and not leaving your TV on standby still has its place, it’s becoming increasingly clear that bigger sweeping changes are needed to redress the climate crisis.
In fact, there have already been some mammoth projects in this area. China’s Tengger Desert solar park covers 16 square miles. South Korea uses an area of a similar size to produce energy from waves, having built an artificial wall to create tidal-power generating Sihwa Lake. The UK powers around 600,000 homes with a single large wind farm off its west coast, and Canada is set to open the world’s biggest green hydrogen plant.
Denmark, though, will be taking things one step further, producing an entire offshore island with the sole aim of making a ginormous step in the country’s drive towards green energy.

What is supposed to be the largest and most efficient solar power plant in the world is currently being built near the Moroccan desert city of Ouarzazate. The Noor solar power plant, which means “Light” in Arabic, is due to be completed by 2020, when it will comprise 4 units. In its final expansion stage, Noor will supply a total of 1.3 million households with electricity. The sun is the most powerful source of energy in our galaxy and could theoretically supply all of humanity with electricity with ease, but what technologies do we have to usher in this new era of electricity?
Could wind power be a more promising alternative? Wind farms are being built at full speed around the world, but is wind energy really viable? Is the enormous investment in wind turbines at all worth it and can it meet our demand for electricity?
China has shown how quickly you can push ahead with the switch from fossil to renewable energy sources. China’s enormous economic growth in recent decades has made the Middle Kingdom the world’s largest energy guzzler. But China is also the world’s largest energy producer. A veritable energy revolution is currently underway. Almost 20 percent of the ever-growing demand for energy is now met by renewable technologies, and a large proportion of the solar cells used worldwide already come from China. What can Europe learn from China? One key to avoiding an electricity crisis could be “decentralization,” so-called “microgrids.” A quiet little town in the Swabian Allgäu region has shown it is possible to produce eight times as much electricity as it needs itself.

The great thing about biomass energy (or simply “bioenergy”) is that its sources are plant and animal waste. So not only does biomass energy divert this organic matter from the waste stream — it turns it into something we all need, without polluting the planet. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, by 2030, the U.S. has the potential to sustainably produce 1 billion tons of bioenergy each year. As far as renewable energy sources go, biomass is not the most glamorous. But, biomass energy successfully solves two major environmental problems at once — an incredible feat if there ever was one!

Renewable Energy 101
Biomass … the original renewable energy. It’s been part of our lives since our ancestors learned to control fire. In fact, it’s made possible by the sun, whose energy is absorbed by trees and plants through photosynthesis and then released when organic matter is burned or decomposes.
First, there’s plant waste. Wood scraps, sawdust and crop waste can be collected from farms or manufacturers. The waste is burned to heat water. The hot water creates steam. The pressure of the steam spins a turbine. The turbine powers a generator. The generator creates electricity. Simple, really!
Next up: animal waste … also known as “the problem of cow poop.” The solution? Waste from farm animals can be collected in a large tank, called a digester, filled with bacteria that eats the waste and converts it to methane gas. The methane is captured and burned to heat water and create steam. Sound familiar? Second verse, same as the first.
This same principle can also be used to capture methane — a potent greenhouse gas with 25 times the heat-trapping ability of carbon dioxide — from landfills. Once a section of the landfill is closed off, pipes are run from the waste to collect the gas, which can then be burned to make electricity or heat. Biomass may not be the prettiest form of renewable energy, and it needs to be used carefully and thoughtfully to protect the ecosystems that prevent greenhouse gas emissions, but it can be a smart way to make use of waste. Power to the poop!
