Harnessing The Sun And Wind: Inside Our Renewable Energy Future | Climate For Change | Ep 2/2

Renewable Energy No Comments »

In the second chapter of this two-part documentary series, daring people and enterprises take wind and solar energy to new frontiers across Asia through groundbreaking renewable energy projects. Deploying renewable energy projects on new terrain or on the sea is challenging but it’s transforming the region for good.

The programme features the installation of the world’s largest nearshore floating solar energy testbed in seawater, SUNSEAP’s 5MW floating solar system on the straits of Johor, north of Singapore. The sea presents new challenges and they must innovate to cope with fluctuating tides, waves, as well as wildlife, in order to send electricity back to the mainland.

The show also features the pioneering work of The Blue Circle, a wind energy company based in Singapore, as their team explores a new wind power site in Cambodia. It also features the development of the first foreign-owned wind farms in Vietnam.

Inside CopenHill: The clean energy plant with its own ski slope | On Location

Alternative Energy No Comments »

In Copenhagen, Denmark lies Amager Bakke, a unique power plant. Not only is it the world’s cleanest waste-to-energy facility, it’s also home to a man-made mountain called CopenHill with its own ski slope, the world’s tallest climbing wall and challenging hiking trails up the building where you’ll find the best views of Copenhagen.

Opened in October 2019, the building was designed Bjarke Ingels Group (aka BIG) with an aim to create a building that can “contribute positively to the city, become part of the city, and even to be a landmark of the capital”. The plant serves 680,000 people and takes waste from up to 300 lorries each day. Its steam turbine produces 63MWh of energy, while its heat exchangers are used in a district heating system.

Inside an energy efficiency scam — capacitors don't save energy

Inside an energy efficiency scam -- capacitors don't save energy

You can find “energy saving” devices on the market that are little more than a capacitor that is wired across the ac lines. In this demonstration shot at Eaton Corp.’s Power Systems Experience Center, Dan Carnovale explains how measurements made with these devices installed can give misleading readings that imply energy savings where none really exist. Most often, unsuspecting victims get fooled by looking at read-outs of watts instead of a read-out of volt-amps.
