What is Tidal Energy?

Renewable energy is energy that is replenished by nature so that it can be used over and over again. Tidal energy is produced by the surge of ocean waters during the rise and fall of the tides.

The world’s oceans are extremely powerful, and the tides are no different. With tidal energy, we can harness some of this vast energy from the changing tides and tidal currents.

The gravity between the Moon, the Earth and the Sun combine to move the tides in and out. The tides change at predictable times linked to the cycle of the moon. In some parts of the world, the speed and the difference in height of the tides is greater, because of the local geography and the Earth’s tilt. By placing devices that harness some of the tidal energy in these narrow channels we can generate electricity that can power communities, and contribute to the power requirements of towns and cities.

With climate change becoming a greater concern, it is our job to find alternative ways to provide energy. Ways that are more available and sustainable than fossil fuels. Tidal energy can play a big part in the solution, as it is renewable, predictable and, if combined with storage, is highly flexible.

Exploring Energy: Biomass

Biomass is considered a renewable organic material that can be burned for energy. However, this isn’t always the case. Quality wood pellets with low moisture content have only about half as much energy content as an equivalent amount of coal (by mass). Biomass power plants also emit 50 to 85 percent more carbon dioxide than modern coal plants, and more than three times as much carbon dioxide as natural gas-fueled power plants.

Heartland’s Linnea Lueken breaks down the details behind this biomass as an energy source in the newest episode of Exploring Energy.

What’s included a company’s carbon footprint? How to measure corporate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions? Every business leader should know what to consider as part of their company footprint, this video explains what’s included.

Often we tend to think about facilities, energy use, and perhaps the fleet – but these account only for a part of a company’s total carbon footprint. The Sustainability Speaker Susanna Hasenoehrl helps you to better understand this, walking you through the concept of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions arise from a company’s operational activities, such as a production facility, or heating or cooling an office. These can be controlled somewhat easily – for example, by switching to renewable energy, or to an electric fleet.

So what about Scope 3? Pukka, a Unilever brand, reports that 49% of their emissions come from boiling the kettle, to make a ‘cuppa’. This is an example of Scope 3 emissions, which are more indirect – yet related to the usage of a company’s products and services.

For most companies, Scope 3 makes up most of their carbon footprint. Scope 3 emissions can be quite difficult to measure, as it includes things like emissions from waste – when a product is disposed of – the supply chain, outsourced activities, and even business travel.

Nonetheless: when you come across a company’s carbon disclosure, do ask whether Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are included.

By utilizing a mobile capture concept, University of Michigan researchers have designed a way to capture 70-80 percent of all CO2 emissions from truck exhaust pipes. The effort aims to help curb climate change.

Climate change is a pressing issue, and carbon dioxide emissions greatly contribute. This process being developed to collect heavy duty exhaust will help reduce emissions and is a renewable process. Once capacity in the tank is reached, steam or hot gas can be used to recycle the materials and repeat the cycle over and over.

This video features Christina Reynolds, PhD Candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Christian M. Lastoskie, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The global food system is responsible for between 20-30% of greenhouse gas emissions. How can we produce rice, a food staple eaten by over half the world’s population — in a way that uses fewer resources and regenerates nature? More and more farmers around the world are adopting an agroecological approach called the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), which reduces water use, methane production, and the use of chemicals, while providing better yields and reducing labour for rice farmers.
