Finally, its time to start working on creating Hydroelectric POWER for the Off Grid Cabin. The 1st step is building a Dam to capture the water so that we can force it to the water wheel that we will be creating in upcoming episodes. Will this work? I SURE HOPE SO!!! Everything we have worked for over the past months all hinges on this idea that our cabin will be truly off grid and powered by WATER!! At best its a theory that we can create enough power to run the cabin but only time will tell. So stay tuned to see how this project comes together!

▶️Introduction

This type of power plant converts potential energy to electrical energy, or, electrical energy to potential energy. They achieve this by allowing water to flow from a high elevation to a lower elevation, or, by pumping water from a low elevation to a higher elevation. When water flows to a lower elevation, the power plant generates electricity. When water is pumped to a higher elevation, the power plant creates a store of potential energy. Pumped storage plants use Francis turbines because they can act as both a hydraulic pump and hydraulic turbine.

Pumped storage power plants are used to balance the frequency, voltage and power demands within the electrical grid. Pump storage plants are often utilised to add additional megawatt capacity to the grid during period of high power demand, for this reason, pumped storage plants are referred to as ‘peaking’ plants.

Because pumped storage plants can provide electrical grid operators with power ‘on-demand’, they have a high level of dispatchability (the ability to provide power to the grid as needed).

Components
Irrespective geographical location, all pumped storage plants require an upper and lower reservoir. The difference in elevation between the upper and lower reservoirs is referred to as the ‘head’ (head of pressure) and it must be significant in order for the plant to operate efficiently.

A penstock connects the upper reservoir to a Francis turbine located in the power house. A draft tube and tail race connects the Francis turbine to the lower reservoir.

Operation – Generating Power (Electricity)
Water flows from the upper reservoir, through the penstock, and to the Francis turbine. As the water passes over the Francis runner blades, a pressure differential is created that causes torque (rotary force) to be applied to the runner. The runner begins to rotate.
The turbine runner is connected on a common shaft to an electrical generator. As the runner rotates, so too does the generator rotor. As the rotor rotates through the electromagnetic field within the generator, it induces current in the stator windings and electrical current begins to flow. The electrical current is usually then dispatched to end consumers via a switchyard and electrical transformer.

Water discharged from the turbine runner enters into a draft tube where some of the kinetic energy is recovered and converted to potential energy; the water then enters the tail race and is discharged to the lower reservoir.

In this example, the potential energy of water was converted by the turbine runner into mechanical energy. The mechanical energy was transferred on a common shaft to a generator, which converted the mechanical energy to electrical energy. The entire process can be continuous until the upper reservoir is emptied.

Operation – Storing Potential Energy
Water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir by the Francis turbine runner. The flow path is the same as when generating electricity, except the flow direction is reversed.

Pumped Storage Economics
Pumped storage plants rely upon the varying price of electricity to make a profit. Many thermal power plants (coal fired, gas fired etc.) cannot increase or reduce their MW output quickly because this would place large thermal stresses on the power plant components (water tube boiler, piping etc.). For this reason, thermal power plants produce almost as much power at night, as they do during the day.

France gets 70% of its power from one carbon-free source. Sweden 40%. Switzerland 36%. The United States 20%.

For those who wish to create a world free of carbon emissions, France is clearly the role model. 

That source of energy, by the way, is not solar or wind. It’s not coal, oil or natural gas, either.

It’s nuclear. 

Nuclear energy is not only cleaner than all other forms of energy. It’s also cheaper to create, abundant and safe. 

Yes, safe.

So, if the world is going to end in a few years because of global warming due to rising CO2 levels, why aren’t we going all out to produce this abundant, clean and safe form of energy? Why aren’t there dozens of nuclear power plants in development all over the world? 

Well, we all know the answer, right? Nuclear energy is just too risky… too dangerous.

So, even though we’re told we’re facing an “existential crisis”—which means humans may cease to exist; even though we might all wither away in unbearable heat; or starve because of world-wide droughts; or drown in rising seas; or be killed in Mad Max-style riots—nuclear energy is off the table… because… it’s too darn risky. 

Hmmm.

I want to be sure I have this right. The goal is to save humanity…There’s a way to save humanity…And we won’t take it. Because we’re afraid, there might be a bad accident… or something. 

Does that make sense to you? Because it doesn’t to me.  

But maybe I’m not giving enough weight to the safety argument, so let’s take a closer look at that since no one, not even the most radical environmentalist, disputes that nuclear power produces massive amounts of energy cleanly and efficiently. 

Safety, like everything else, is a matter of context. So, here’s some context. 1.4 million people die worldwide every year in traffic accidents, 2.3 million in work-related accidents, 4.2 million from air pollution. Deaths directly related to nuclear power? Under 200—not annually but in the entire history of the nuclear power industry. 

But what about those famous nuclear disasters we’ve all heard so much about? Didn’t they poison untold thousands? Three Mile Island in 1979, Chernobyl in 1986 and Fukushima in 2011. 

Okay, let’s deal with each one.  

Three Mile Island:

There was an accident at the plant, yes, but the amount of radiation that leaked was no more than one might receive taking a chest x-ray. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission acknowledged as much four weeks after the initial media hysteria died down. “We goofed,” the commission told Congress.  “There was no danger of any hydrogen explosion.” But that didn’t grab the headlines. 

Chernobyl: 

The accident developed into a catastrophe only because of pitiful safety procedures unique to the Soviet Union. It would never have occured in the West. Even so, initial reports of radiation leakage turned out to be grossly exaggerated. According to the World Health Organization, “As of mid-2005”—that’s 19 years after the explosion—“fewer than 50 deaths had been directly attributed to radiation from the disaster.” 

Fukushima:

In 2011, as a result of an earthquake and tsunami, the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant was destroyed, and nuclear radiation was released. Yet, despite the media hysteria, not one person at the power plant died because of radiation leaks. The deaths that occurred in the area were the result of the tsunami. 

Well, what about nuclear waste? Surely that’s terribly harmful. 

Actually, no. All the nuclear waste ever generated in the US can fit on a single football field stacked less than seventy feet high. It’s easily and safely buried in steel canisters encased in concrete.

About fifteen years ago, humanity realized that if it does not want to be like the proverbial frog – which was boiled in milk for the sake of momentary comfort – then we must immediately stop burning minerals that create a greenhouse effect. Indeed, since the beginning of the 20th century, the average annual temperature on the planet has increased by 1 degree. If it continues this way, then in the 21st century it will rise by another 4 degrees! Fearing this, mankind frantically began developing green energy. Apparently, we have achieved impressive results. The total installed capacity of renewable electricity has doubled over the past 10 years and amounted to 2,537 GW. There are even countries – Iceland, for example – where the share of green energy was 100%! Costa Rica and Austria are closing in, while in Germany the share of green energy exceeds 50%. We seem to be crawling out of the warm milk, don’t we?

Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy – BBC News

European scientists say they have made a major breakthrough in their quest to develop practical nuclear fusion – the energy process that powers the stars.

The UK-based JET laboratory has smashed its own world record for the amount of energy it can extract by squeezing together two forms of hydrogen.

If nuclear fusion can be successfully recreated on Earth it holds out the potential of virtually unlimited supplies of low-carbon, low-radiation energy.

The experiments produced 59 megajoules of energy over five seconds, more than double what was achieved in similar tests back in 1997.

In fact, we observe an increasing interest in nuclear power to combat fossil fuel emissions and climate change. Bill Gates, Microsoft Co-founder and philanthropist, is investing in so-called “new” nuclear technology, and Frank Thelen, a well-know German VC investor, consiers nuclear power sustainable and a key for decarbonization. So do some countries, like China, Russia, and the United States. Even the Fridays-For-Future movement (FFF) is engaged in this discussion.

In this TEDxTUBerlin talk, I take a different position. As an industrial engineer and political economist, I deploy an interdisciplinary approach: I provide technological arguments, in combination with economic analysis and I address the long-term dream about the “potential” of nuclear power that prevails since 1945, but in reality has never come true. Prof. Dr. Christian von Hirschhausen is a German economist and currently the chairman of the Workgroup for Infrastructure Policy (WIP) at Berlin Institute of Technology (TU Berlin).
