Biofuel instead of coal and oil – How promising are these renewable resources? | DW Documentary

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Can our petroleum-based market economy make the switch to renewable resources? According to scientists, politicians and industrial leaders, a “biobased economy” is a sustainable alternative. What lies behind this optimism?

The biobased economy promises to help solve some of the world’s biggest problems, including climate change, species extinction, pesticide residues and depleted soil. It foresees plants, fungi and insects replacing environmentally unfriendly coal and petroleum as raw materials, and microorganisms being used to produce chemicals.

But even these renewable resources require a production process, and that harbors new potential dangers. These include land appropriation, the destruction of already dwindling natural ecosystems, and the exploitation of nature for profit to an ever-greater extent. This documentary examines the economic cycle as a whole, from the production of biomass to processing and finished products.

Exceptional Engineering: The Making of a Wind Turbine | Engineering Documentary
Electricity harnessed from wind has become the second largest source of energy in Germany since 2017 – and has thus out powered nuclear and coal. Nearly 30,000 on- and off-shore wind turbines are operating throughout the country, covering approx. 19 percent of energy consumption. Our report follows the construction of a new wind power plant in Falkenthal in Brandenburg. Once installed, the windmill will be 179 meters high, supplying up to 5,000 households a year.

How Wind Turbine Technicians Risk Their Lives to Keep Blades Spinning | Risky Business

In Portugal, technicians risk their lives every day to repair the wind turbines that provide energy across the country. They rappel down from turbines as high as 360 feet with only climbing rope and a harness keeping them safe.

Wind Energy | Future of Renewable Energy | Full Documentary

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Wind power is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy technologies. Usage is on the rise worldwide, in part because costs are falling. Global installed wind-generation capacity onshore and offshore has increased by a factor of almost 75 in the past two decades, jumping from 7.5 gigawatts (GW) in 1997 to some 564 GW by 2018, according to IRENA’s latest data. Production of wind electricity doubled between 2009 and 2013, and in 2016 wind energy accounted for 16% of the electricity generated by renewables. Many parts of the world have strong wind speeds, but the best locations for generating wind power are sometimes remote ones. Offshore wind power offers tremendous potential.

Wind turbines first emerged more than a century ago. Following the invention of the electric generator in the 1830s, engineers started attempting to harness wind energy to produce electricity. Wind power generation took place in the United Kingdom and the United States in 1887 and 1888, but modern wind power is considered to have been first developed in Denmark, where horizontal-axis wind turbines were built in 1891 and a 22.8-metre wind turbine began operation in 1897.

Wind is used to produce electricity using the kinetic energy created by air in motion. This is transformed into electrical energy using wind turbines or wind energy conversion systems. Wind first hits a turbine’s blades, causing them to rotate and turn the turbine connected to them. That changes the kinetic energy to rotational energy, by moving a shaft which is connected to a generator, and thereby producing electrical energy through electromagnetism.

The amount of power that can be harvested from wind depends on the size of the turbine and the length of its blades. The output is proportional to the dimensions of the rotor and to the cube of the wind speed. Theoretically, when wind speed doubles, wind power potential increases by a factor of eight.

Wind-turbine capacity has increased over time. In 1985, typical turbines had a rated capacity of 0.05 megawatts (MW) and a rotor diameter of 15 metres. Today’s new wind power projects have turbine capacities of about 2 MW onshore and 3–5 MW offshore.

Commercially available wind turbines have reached 8 MW capacity, with rotor diameters of up to 164 metres. The average capacity of wind turbines increased from 1.6 MW in 2009 to 2 MW in 2014.

Energy Efficient Buildings | Clean Power | Changemakers | Business Documentary from 2009

In this episode we look at the home of the future. A gizmo that generates clean power within
your house; a skyscraper combo-glass that insulates from the tropical heat, is self-cleaning – and
actually generates electricity for the building from the sunlight that falls on it; and the professors in Taiwan busy pulling down walls and digging up concrete, making a start on turning the ultra-urban Taipei into a haven for streams and wild plants.

Changemakers
Had enough of eco-doom and gloom? Taking swimming lessons to cope with the rising sea-levels after climate change? This series looks at some of the weirdest climate change projects emerging from Asia. With its ever-increasing emissions comes the huge threat of climate change.
But Changemakers won’t take no for an answer. They’ve been told that Asia is the problem, with its ever-increasing emissions – but they also know that Asia, with its boundless energy and creativity, can come up with the solutions, too. Scientists and activists across all fields of science and technology are coming up with ideas large and small that all make a difference – and can help inspire others the world over.

Serial CEO Bill Nussey has created thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in value throughout his career. Learning
that the cost of solar and wind-generated energy was now competitive with fossil fuels led to an epiphany.

In 2016, Bill founded the Freeing Energy Project to accelerate the shift to cleaner and cheaper energy. His book, which outlines his findings following more than a year of research and interviews with top energy experts, is slated for publication in 2018. He plans to turn his attention toward a small set of companies that will further
the Freeing Energy mission.

Bill received a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University, worked as a venture
capitalist with Greylock, and received his MBA from Harvard Business School. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Solar energy in Morocco | DW Documentary (Renewable energy documentary)

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Solar energy in Morocco is transforming the renewable energy scene. One of the world’s biggest solar power plants is situated in Morocco.

Jaouad Ait Rebah changes a lot of people’s lives in the High Atlas Mountains – by bringing light where there is darkness. The Moroccan entrepreneur installs solar panels in the area’s picturesque, but remote villages. For the high-altitude residents, the difference is like that of night and day.

The beautiful scenery is mostly lost on those living there. They live in extreme poverty. Many young people have left due to the lack of jobs. Now, however, the solar panels are modernizing the villages.
Jaouad Ait Rebah and his work symbolize the energy revolution that has been sweeping across Morocco in recent years. The country is leading the change to renewables in Africa, as is evident in Jaouad’s native Ouarzazate.

The city is home to one of the biggest solar power plants in the world, comprising almost one million parabolic mirrors. King Mohammed VI. is investing billion in the facility, which provides electricity to two million people. By 2040, Morocco aims to generate almost half of its power from renewable energy sources.

Our team accompanied Jaouad Ait Rebah as he went about his challenging and laborious work, marveling at the scale of the enormous solar facilities, and asks to what degree King Mohammed VI.’s ambitious projects are actually trickling down to the little people.
