Wind power is one of the fastest-growing renewable sources that works well at scale, but it isn’t perfect. What if we could scale down wind turbine power to something that could fit on your roof? And be self-contained with smaller moving parts … or maybe no blades or moving parts at all? Let’s look at some future alternatives for harnessing wind power.

In southeastern Texas, surrounded by farmland, Rosendin Renewable Energy Group is building the largest solar power project in the state. The Aktina Renewable Power Project calls for installing 1.4 million solar modules across 4,000 acres in Wharton County, located outside the Houston Metro area.
Rosendin partnered on the 500MWac/631MWdc solar installation with Tokyo Gas America, Ltd. (TGA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan’s largest provider of city gas, Tokyo Gas Co. Ltd. (Tokyo Gas).
Aktina will provide the capacity to generate 500MWac/631MWdc of renewable energy, enough to power 100,000 homes annually. To meet growing regional demand, the power generated at Aktina will be brought online in blocks starting in mid-2021 and sold to the ERCOT wholesale market.

What’s new in 2015?
1. Closed-caption made by myself! — not the automatic subtitle anymore.
2. Learning objectives added for each video.
3. Quiz questions added — including end-of assessment questions and preparatory, exploratory questions.
4. Mistakes fixed and cleaned up.
5. New examples/contents for selective videos.
My old videos and playlists will still be left on YouTube. Feel free to watch either one. Personally I think the revised videos are better mainly because of the subtitle.
Learning objectives of this video:
To introduce the concepts of power and mechanical efficiency, and their calculations. Video Rating: / 5

I travel to a home in the mountains of Western North Carolina to meet Jay. He has come up with a way to pull a portion of water out of a creek and into two permanent magnet alternators. He feeds the power to the house to supplement what is used. Jay is using Langston Alternative Power for his setup and makes around 800 watts.

This system is making water power by spinning two pma’s that send AC power to the house. Rectifiers convert the AC power to DC power so that it can be stored in batteries. This power goes to dedicated circuits in the home. Now if the batteries voltage drops low the grid power takes over again.

The ocean’s waves are immensely powerful. Harnessing that energy for grid-scale electricity production would be a major boon to the clean energy industry, but building durable, powerful, and cost-effective wave energy converters has proven difficult. Now though, an influx of federal funding is helping many U.S. companies gear up to test their latest wave energy technologies, giving many in the industry hope that wave power will see massive growth over the next few decades.

With tidal power we don’t have to rely on building massive dams and waterways that disrupt the environment in order to capture that power. Even though visions of underwater bladed turbines might pop into your head, there’s some other technology that may surprise you … like an undulating membrane that produces electricity … or perhaps an underwater kite.
