This 4 nozzle micro hydro system is making 500 plus watts of power for an of grid cabin in the woods. First up is the intake. A stainless steel Coanda screen pulls over 200 gallons per minute to reduce the debris that enters the system. Next is a 4″ penstock to carry the water from the source to the pma or permanent magnet alternator. This PMA has four nozzles that sweep around the unit on all sides. The water jets made by these nozzles push the spoons or cups on the pelton wheel. Wild 3 phase AC power is sent to the house. A rectifier converts the wild ac to direct current. This is used by the charge controller to store in the battery and finally be used in the house from an 8kw off grid inverter.

I travel to a home in the mountains of Western North Carolina to meet Jay. He has come up with a way to pull a portion of water out of a creek and into two permanent magnet alternators. He feeds the power to the house to supplement what is used. Jay is using Langston Alternative Power for his setup and makes around 800 watts.

This system is making water power by spinning two pma’s that send AC power to the house. Rectifiers convert the AC power to DC power so that it can be stored in batteries. This power goes to dedicated circuits in the home. Now if the batteries voltage drops low the grid power takes over again.

This hydroelectric power was built in 2020 and has a full 10 part series if you are interested in learning more. I have wanted to install micro hydro power for many years. I am happy to say that I now have a unit up and running. This is making anywhere from 100w to 450w depending on the rain level and season. The components of my install include
1. Elgin coanda intake screen
2. 55 gallon tank as silt catchment
3. 1100 feet of penstock providing 150 feet of head pressure
4. Pelton wheel and permanent magnet alternator from Langston’s alternative power
5. 250 feet of 10/3 wire
6. AC to DC rectifier
7. Midnite classic 250v charge controller
8. Grid tie limiter inverter
9. AGM batteries
10. Off Grid 6000w inverter

The interesting thing about this micro hydro setup is the way that the system is started. There is a lot of water that needs to flow over a dam. To get this system going Bill uses a simple shop vac to pull the water over into the 6″ pipe.

No batteries or charge controller is needed. Simply a grid tie limiter inverter.
