The Future of Solar Energy | Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells are a remarkably cheap solar cell technology and have achieved remarkable growth since their inception a decade ago, sharply increasing in efficiency from 3.8% to 25.2%, near to their theoretical efficiency. Thus, the perovskite solar cell could be the future of solar energy. Perovskite solar cells are a new technology and still needs to be scaled up for commercial applications, but perovskites have the potential to revolutionise the energy harvesting market, with cheap, high efficiency solar energy in the near future. In this video, we’ll explore perovskite solar panels and how they might energize our future.

Hydropower – Power of the future or relic of the past?

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Hydropower has been the largest global provider of renewable electricity for over 100 years and represents the first mainstream source of renewable energy. However, many environmental groups don’t view large-scale hydro as truly renewable. So what is it? Is hydroelectricity a foundation of our energy future or something better left in our past?

Renewable Energy Is Our Future: Eric Martinot at TEDxTokyo

Alternative Energy No Comments »

Affordable renewable energy is still science fiction, right? Dead wrong, says Dr. Eric Martinot, and he should know. A former senior energy specialist with the World Bank in Washington, DC from 1999 to 2003 and affiliated with the Worldwatch Institute, Eric created an annual compendium on renewable power in 2005 called the REN21 Renewables Global Status Report. The author of that and dozens of other influential publications on renewable and sustainable energy since 1990, he’s also an editorial board member of the journal Energy Policy. Currently a senior research director with the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies in Tokyo and teaching fellow at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, Eric shuttles between Japan, China, Europe and New Zealand researching real-life examples of renewable energy to track our long-term energy future to 2050. He’ll be spending most of 2013 and 2014 on a global tour speaking about his pioneering REN21 Renewables Global Futures Report, issued in January 2013.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Gasifier uses wood pellets to create flammable mixture that a generator can run on without gasoline. This video shows how it was constructed, how it works, and how to use it from start to finish. Great project for anyone looking for alternative energy or wanting to live off the grid.

Just for some clarification — I mention a rheostat that I ordered; I ordered a 25w 20 ohm rheostat. That rheostat will effectively give me the control to adjust the voltage to the blower motor from 12v down to nearly 0v (I think… I’m not an electrical engineer).

The Power of Natural Gas: Complementing Renewables for a Sustainable Energy Future | GE Power

Renewable Energy No Comments »

As more renewable power is added to the grid, its limitations and intermittent nature present a challenge: utilities and operators must constantly fill the gap between supply and demand.

But that’s where #naturalgas power plants come in. They work to provide the capacity a renewables-heavy grid can depend on. They can start or stop quickly, ramping up or down in load as wind or sunlight conditions vary.

Natural gas plants are playing an important role in the future of power, enabling reliable, affordable and more sustainable energy.

Harnessing The Sun And Wind: Inside Our Renewable Energy Future | Climate For Change | Ep 2/2

Renewable Energy No Comments »

In the second chapter of this two-part documentary series, daring people and enterprises take wind and solar energy to new frontiers across Asia through groundbreaking renewable energy projects. Deploying renewable energy projects on new terrain or on the sea is challenging but it’s transforming the region for good.

The programme features the installation of the world’s largest nearshore floating solar energy testbed in seawater, SUNSEAP’s 5MW floating solar system on the straits of Johor, north of Singapore. The sea presents new challenges and they must innovate to cope with fluctuating tides, waves, as well as wildlife, in order to send electricity back to the mainland.

The show also features the pioneering work of The Blue Circle, a wind energy company based in Singapore, as their team explores a new wind power site in Cambodia. It also features the development of the first foreign-owned wind farms in Vietnam.

Building large-scale renewable energy projects demands time, money, human capital, and risk tolerance. Most renewable projects would never be built without the involvement of third-party debt and equity investors. Understanding the essential assets, financial attributes and risks associated with renewables projects is prerequisite to an understanding of renewable project financing. It also provides insights into public policies, consumer preferences, economies of scale and other macro topics that will influence the future of renewables. With this overview in mind, we will address the following questions:

What are the most common types of financings available for utility-scale wind and solar energy generation projects?
At what points in a project’s life cycle do financings come into play?
What assets are necessary for these financings, and what economic incentives and considerations shape these investments?
What are “offtake agreements”, and what role do they play in a project’s operations and financings?
What is “tax equity financing”, and how do the federal “Production Tax Credit” (for wind) and “Investment Tax Credit” (primarily for solar) benefit renewable projects?

What are the macro drivers of new renewables investments, and what opportunities exist to expand renewables?

Alternative Energy No Comments »

This week we are exploring alternative energy sources. We’ll look at how biomass can be burned as a fuel source, how hydrogen can be used in a fuel cell to generate electrical power, and how nuclear fission provides power to the grid. We’ll also discuss how nuclear fusion might someday do the same without any radioactive waste.

What Is Green Hydrogen And Will It Power The Future?

Hydrogen is a clean-burning molecule, meaning that it can help to decarbonize a range of sectors that have proved hard to clean up in the past. But today, most hydrogen is produced from CO2-emitting fossil fuels. Hydrogen produced from renewable electricity, known as green hydrogen, could be the solution to cutting our carbon footprint. But first, it must overcome a number of challenges.
