These are micro hydroelectric converter from flowing water.ranging from 10 – 20 watts and 0 – 22 volts ac.Useful for remote off grid rural areas as well as in camping. It is enough to light domestic led bulbs/tubes, charge mobiles, charge a 12 volt 4 Ah battery etc..

Awesome Low Head High Flow Grid Tie Micro Hydro 530 watts!

Alternative Energy No Comments »

I travel to a summer home in the mountains of Western North Carolina to meet Bill. He has come up with a way to pull a lot of water over a dam and into a permanent magnet alternator. He feeds the power to the house to supplement what is used. Bill is using Langston Alternative Power for his setup and makes around 500 watts.
http://www.langstonsalternativepower.com
The interesting thing about this micro hydro setup is the way that the system is started. There is a lot of water that needs to flow over a dam. To get this system going Bill uses a simple shop vac to pull the water over into the 6″ pipe.

No batteries or charge controller is needed. Simply a grid tie limiter inverter.

Rain Gutter POWER #1 – How to Harvest Free Energy From Your Roof with a Hydro Electric Generator!

Alternative Energy No Comments »

A lot of people wonder if there’s any power in the rain falling on our roofs. This video series starts with the theory of how much power is available then attempts to achieve it in practice. It was a lot of fun to BUILD, hopefully you enjoy it and learn something in the process.

For those in the comments that insist I didn’t compensate for the angle of the roof in the rainfall calculation, did I not say “once I calculate the horizontal distance…”?

I only do per-creation subscriptions and recommend setting a monthly limit in case I upload more than once in a month (which will be rare). I want to have the option of taking a month off and not keep taking your money just because another month has passed!

Thanks for watching…

Harvesting hydro power from rain gutters! It sounds impossible but it works. This is part 1 of a video series on the theory and implementation of capturing hydro-electric power from the roof. For part 2 click here:

CBSE Class 10 Science – Sources of Energy – The Principal behind the Hydro Power Plant is converting the Kinetic energy into Electrical Energy. The energy due to motion of substance is known as Kinetic Energy. If we connect the turbine to flowing water the Kinetic Energy of Water will then get converted into Electrical Energy

Off-Grid Hydro Power: Too Much Power!

Alternative Energy No Comments »

This off-grid hydro power system has a major problem; too much power. Jeff has stumbled upon a small clan of off-grid homeschoolers and discovers that their power system is a major source of angst.

Their stream engine produces around 1200-1300 Watts continuously and their load controller must get rid of any excess power by dumping the power into a hot water tank. Image the struggle to use copious amounts of hot water!

A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell that converts the chemical energy from a fuel into electricity through an electrochemical reaction of hydrogen fuel with oxygen or another oxidizing agent. Fuel cells are different from batteries in requiring a continuous source of fuel and oxygen (usually from air) to sustain the chemical reaction, whereas in a battery the chemical energy comes from chemicals already present in the battery. Fuel cells can produce electricity continuously for as long as fuel and oxygen are supplied.

The first fuel cells were invented in 1838. The first commercial use of fuel cells came more than a century later in NASA space programmes to generate power for satellites and space capsules. Since then, fuel cells have been used in many other applications. Fuel cells are used for primary and backup power for commercial, industrial and residential buildings and in remote or inaccessible areas. They are also used to power fuel cell vehicles, including forklifts, automobiles, buses, boats, motorcycles and submarines. – From Wikipedia
