Nuclear waste from power plants could be recycled to create ‘ultra-long-life’ power sources, according to a team of researchers from the University the Bristol.

Scientists are developing diamond batteries which use energy from radioactive materials in the hope of transforming waste from decommissioned power stations across the UK. They were seen at work in Bristol on Wednesday.

“What we’ll be looking for is higher power devices which will incorporate much bigger diamond material or stacks of materials,” Scott said.

He explained: “[They] take ten to 15 years to get towards devices we could use in satellites, or spacecrafts, and perhaps one day, long in the future, maybe even mobile phones.”

Potential applications range from powering hearing aids and pacemakers to the automotive sector. “We might have four diamond batteries in your car, not to power it along the road but to tell the car when the pressure in the tires is getting low,” Scott added.

If 34 billion dollars in capital investment would provide for the energy needs of 6 million people almost pollutant free, would you do it? That’s the question Denmark – population a touch under that 6 million – is currently answering with a resounding yes.

Green energy, as we all know, is looking likely to be one of the keys to humanity’s future. If it’s successful, it will represent a societal change with implications for the whole planet. While recycling your bottles and not leaving your TV on standby still has its place, it’s becoming increasingly clear that bigger sweeping changes are needed to redress the climate crisis.

In fact, there have already been some mammoth projects in this area. China’s Tengger Desert solar park covers 16 square miles. South Korea uses an area of a similar size to produce energy from waves, having built an artificial wall to create tidal-power generating Sihwa Lake. The UK powers around 600,000 homes with a single large wind farm off its west coast, and Canada is set to open the world’s biggest green hydrogen plant.
Denmark, though, will be taking things one step further, producing an entire offshore island with the sole aim of making a ginormous step in the country’s drive towards green energy.

China is exploring new technologies to recycle kitchen waste into energy sources including biodiesel and methane gas. One facility in Shanghai can reportedly extract about 18 tonnes of crude biofuel from about 1,000 tonnes of such waste.

Turning waste into energy has usually meant incineration – that is, burning our trash. But this method has major environmental drawbacks. Gasification could be a better alternative. It’s an old technology that proponents hope to repurpose as a cleaner and more economical waste-to-energy solution, and now a number of companies in this space say they’re on the verge of commercialization and expansion.

We produce over 2 billion tons of waste per year, a number that’s expected to grow by 70% by 2050. We’ve long sought ways to turn all this waste into energy, but this has usually meant incineration – that is, burning our trash – a method that many environmentalists say is far too polluting.

A better solution may lie in gasification, an old technology that advocates are trying to repurpose as a way to deal with our waste. Gasification companies don’t burn trash, instead they turn into a synthetic gas, in a process they say is both economical and eco-friendly.

This synthetic gas can then be converted into a wide variety of end products like electricity, diesel fuel, hydrogen fuel, or ethanol, depending on whats most valuable in any given market.

While in the past, gasification companies have struggled to scale-up and meet their energy production targets, now companies like Sierra Energy, Enerkem and Plasco say they’re ready to commercialize and expand.
