Australian Renewable Energy Agency CEO Darren Miller told Sky News Australia has made “incredible progress” in the transition to renewable energy sources.
This comes after an International Energy Agency climate report set out a roadmap to net zero emissions by 2050 which suggested relatively wealthy countries should phase out coal-fired power plants by the end of the decade.
The report did not support calls for some states and federal politicians to continue investment in fossil fuels such as coal-fired power stations or Australia’s plans for a gas-fired recovery.
“The report is really saying what Australian is underway doing with our incredible progress we’ve made in renewable energy to date with almost 25 per cent of electricity coming from renewable sources now,” Mr Miller said.
“There’s sort of no stopping that transition because renewables are now the cheapest form of energy regeneration.
“We just need to figure out how to have that happen in a secure and reliable way as we balance the system and also as we turn our attention to the other parts of the economy outside of the electricity sector.
“It’s important to make progress on technologies to reduce those emissions too”. Video Rating: / 5

Affordable renewable energy is still science fiction, right? Dead wrong, says Dr. Eric Martinot, and he should know. A former senior energy specialist with the World Bank in Washington, DC from 1999 to 2003 and affiliated with the Worldwatch Institute, Eric created an annual compendium on renewable power in 2005 called the REN21 Renewables Global Status Report. The author of that and dozens of other influential publications on renewable and sustainable energy since 1990, he’s also an editorial board member of the journal Energy Policy. Currently a senior research director with the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies in Tokyo and teaching fellow at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, Eric shuttles between Japan, China, Europe and New Zealand researching real-life examples of renewable energy to track our long-term energy future to 2050. He’ll be spending most of 2013 and 2014 on a global tour speaking about his pioneering REN21 Renewables Global Futures Report, issued in January 2013.

Just for some clarification — I mention a rheostat that I ordered; I ordered a 25w 20 ohm rheostat. That rheostat will effectively give me the control to adjust the voltage to the blower motor from 12v down to nearly 0v (I think… I’m not an electrical engineer).

Renewable Energy 101
Question: What’s the most abundant energy source in our solar system? Here’s a hint, it’s 1 million times bigger than the Earth and without it our planet would be a dark, cold rock floating in space. You guessed it: the incredible, brilliant sun.
The Earth gets more energy from this ball of fire and gas in one day than the whole world’s population uses in an entire year. Every living thing depends on the sun for its existence, from tiny microbes deep in the ocean to plants, animals and people.
Humans have been tinkering with solar energy since the dawn of time. Ancient civilizations used glass and mirrors to light fires, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that technology was developed to convert the sun’s energy into electricity using photovoltaic cells. Today, solar technology is more efficient and less expensive and is used all around the globe to create electricity, heat water, cook food and even power vehicles.
So how do solar panels usually work? When the sun hits a solar panel, material inside (usually silicon) absorbs the energy. This causes the electrons and its atoms to get very excited and start dancing around. The atoms then get hot and shed the electrons, which travel out of the panel through copper wiring and — ZAP! — we have electricity! A control device called an inverter changes this electricity from direct current to the alternating current we use. The electricity then passes from breaker boxes to outlets and into electrical items like a computer and lights. Whatever you don’t use can go back into the grid to be used by someone else.
So there you have it — the amazing power of the sun. Some people see a future where most of our energy can come from this pollution-free and renewable resource, and that’s a sunny outlook that will make the whole world smile!

Gordian Raacke is executive director of Renewable Energy Long Island, a not-for-profit organization working to accelerate the transition to 100% renewable energy systems. With a degree in civil engineer and 25-year track record on regional energy issues, Mr. Raacke will portray why and how we must and will transition to a 100% renewable energy supply glocally.
Gordian was a founding member of the Long Island Offshore Wind Initiative established in 2002, helped build the solar market on Long Island, and was trained by Vice President Al Gore as a Climate Reality Leader. In 2011, he led an initiative to study a one-hundred percent renewable electricity future for the region. He chaired the Energy Sustainability Committee of the Town of East Hampton and serves on the Town of Southampton Sustainability Committee, helping to formulate and implement community-wide 100% renewable energy goals. I put this episode together to help a subscriber who has to do a Science Project on making renewable energy from recycled materials.
I found a few projects around the house I had built in the past, they are mainly based on Direct Current Motors being turned by some device to produce electricity. So using thrown out exercise bikes, electric scooters etc to generate electricity to power lights and motorized butterflies!
The finale is where I teardown a printer/scanner which had been thrown out, and using the print rail, generate electricity to make a creepy dolls eyes light up…

Renewable Energy 101
Water covers 71% of the Earth’s surface and is vital to our daily lives. It can also be a clean, renewable, reliable source of electricity.
Hydroelectric energy comes from capturing the force of moving water that’s in our Earth’s rivers and oceans. We do this by using the movement of the water to spin hydraulic turbines. That generates kinetic energy, which is converted to electricity through a generator and then sent to the power grid.
Most hydropower is generated from dams built on rivers and streams, often where there’s a big drop in elevation so gravity can help us out. Dams block the water’s natural flow and force it through a large pipe with the turbine and generator before releasing it back into the stream on the other side of the dam. Today, we know that dams — most of which were built before the 1960s here in the U.S. — can disrupt river ecosystems. There haven’t been many new hydro plants built in the U.S. in a few decades, but some existing dams are beginning to be tapped for their electricity-generating potential, and existing hydro facilities are being upgraded to be less harmful to plants, fish and wildlife. This helps us get the electricity we need by protecting the natural environment around us. Now that’s a win-win!
