What is deep geothermal energy?

Renewable Energy No Comments »

Deep geothermal is when heat from the Earth is used to produce energy, by drilling wells and pumping water. This is also sometimes called an Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS).

The naturally hot granite, here called the Carnmenellis Granite, heats up the water that exists in the rock, which is then pumped up the well. The deepest well, called the production well, will be around 4.5km deep and water at the bottom of the well will be around 190 degrees centigrade.

When the hot water reaches the surface (where it will now be around 175 degrees centigrade) the heat drives a turbine using a heat exchanger. This turbine generates electricity which is fed into the Western Power network. The now cooler water (between 70 and 80 degrees centigrade) travels back down the shorter injection well, which will be around 2.5km deep, to continue the cycle using the approximately 300m wide natural fracture system of the Porthtowan Fault Zone.

If successful this will be the UK’s first geothermal power plant, just outside Redruth in Cornwall.

The University’s research into the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power project is housed in the Sustainable Earth Institute and is funded by Cornwall Council and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

RFF's Advanced Energy Technologies Series: "The Future of Geothermal Energy"

Renewable Energy No Comments »

Addressing climate change—particularly at reasonable cost—will require advancements in a range of energy-related technologies. The Advanced Energy Technologies Series accompanies the work RFF researchers are undertaking to understand and examine the cost trajectories and future deployment potential of these technologies.

On September 15, 2020, RFF hosted a webinar focused on the uses of geothermal energy/enhanced geothermal systems in both direct heating and low-carbon electricity generation. Geothermal energy experts Todd Cowen (Cornell University) and Tim Latimer (Fervo Energy) discussed the state of geothermal technology, the challenges that currently exist, and recent policy drivers impacting geothermal energy. RFF Senior Fellow and Future of Power Initiative Director Karen Palmer then moderated a Q&A session.

Geothermal Energy is the energy obtained from the interior of the Earth. This energy is highly advantageous when compared to other energy forms as it produces 15% less greenhouse effect when compared to coal and is available 24 hours 365 days when compared to sources of energy like solar power and wind power. The availability of geothermal varies a lot and there are few places which are blessed with this form of energy. The electricity power generation plant based on geothermal energy are of dry steam type, flash type and binary type. This geothermal energy is also deployed to produce heating effect in winters and cooling effect in summers. Watch the video for more details.

Deep Geothermal at EDEN PROJECT | FULLY CHARGED

SUBSCRIBE, LIKE & SHARE for a Fully Charged future!

Could geothermal power be the future of electricity generation? Robert visits Cornwall to find out how Eden Geothermal are unlocking geothermal energy in the granite beneath the ground.

Their seriously impressive geothermal drilling rig might be the same kit you use to drill for oil and gas, but instead they are targeting clean, natural, sustainable energy from the rocks deep below. This is the first phase of a two well development which will completely power the eco-focused Eden Project making it carbon neutral as well as potentially power 17,000 surrounding houses.

What is really exciting about this project is that it feels like the beginning of a new geothermal energy industry could be on the horizon.

How a geothermal breakthrough could transform our energy grid

Renewable Energy No Comments »

Newberry Volcano — the largest volcano in the Pacific Northwest — is the site of an experiment that’s aiming for a breakthrough in geothermal energy.

The experiment is one small step in the high-risk, high-reward world of next generation
geothermal. The goal is to replace fossil fuels with this always-on, renewable energy. The challenge, however, is getting it to work.

Explore how geothermal energy— the heat in the Earth’s crust— is being used to create renewable electricity and power.

While the weather in Iceland is often cold, wet, and windy, a nearly endless supply of heat bubbles away below the surface. In fact, almost every building in the country is heated by geothermal energy in a process with virtually no carbon emissions. So how exactly does this renewable energy work? Jean-Baptiste P. Koehl explores the two primary models for harnessing the planet’s natural heat.

Lesson by Jean-Baptiste P. Koehl, directed by Charlotte Arene.

Geothermal for new construction and retrofit

Renewable Energy No Comments »

Geothermal technology is one of the most energy efficient ways to heat and cool your home. Installation methods allow almost any type or style of home to take advantage of geothermal heating and cooling. Whether its new construction or retrofit, installing geothermal could be right for you.

Matt got the chance to meet up with Wade, a fellow builder in Rhode Island, who is in the process of installing a geothermal heating system at one of his projects. Geothermal heating systems have been around for much longer than you may think, and in theory are quite environmentally friendly and efficient. But due to a lack of consumer knowledge and the assumed complexity, geothermal still makes up a small fraction of HVAC systems used in America. But, as Wade and Lou (Wade’s HVAC installer) will tell us, these systems are more affordable than you think, and an excellent way to go about heating your house. There are a couple different types of geothermal heating systems, but essentially pipes in the ground circulate a water solution and extract heat energy and transfer it into buildings. If you are interested in learning more about this system, check out the video and listen to what Lou and Wade have to say!
