Ethiopia has an innovative power plant that turns waste to energy | Ways to Change the World

Alternative Energy No Comments »

This innovative power plant in Ethiopia burns waste to produce enough energy for up to a quarter of homes in the capital city, Addis Ababa.

The plant also produces water, eco-friendly bricks and creates hundreds of local jobs.

In the film, Global Managing Director, Samuel Alemayehu, talks us through how the project works and the impact and benefits it has for Ethiopia.

How Gasification Turns Waste Into Energy

How Gasification Turns Waste Into Energy

Turning waste into energy has usually meant incineration – that is, burning our trash. But this method has major environmental drawbacks. Gasification could be a better alternative. It’s an old technology that proponents hope to repurpose as a cleaner and more economical waste-to-energy solution, and now a number of companies in this space say they’re on the verge of commercialization and expansion.

We produce over 2 billion tons of waste per year, a number that’s expected to grow by 70% by 2050. We’ve long sought ways to turn all this waste into energy, but this has usually meant incineration – that is, burning our trash – a method that many environmentalists say is far too polluting.

A better solution may lie in gasification, an old technology that advocates are trying to repurpose as a way to deal with our waste. Gasification companies don’t burn trash, instead they turn into a synthetic gas, in a process they say is both economical and eco-friendly.

This synthetic gas can then be converted into a wide variety of end products like electricity, diesel fuel, hydrogen fuel, or ethanol, depending on whats most valuable in any given market.

While in the past, gasification companies have struggled to scale-up and meet their energy production targets, now companies like Sierra Energy, Enerkem and Plasco say they’re ready to commercialize and expand.

The Hidden Truth Behind Sweden's Waste Disposal Infrastructure

Alternative Energy No Comments »

To Burn or Not to Burn: In Sweden, waste incineration plants convert excess and non-recycled rubbish into energy. The Swedish government classifies this process as recycling, but is this form of waste disposal really sustainable?

At a waste incineration plant in Västerås, Sweden, sixty tonnes of waste are burnt every hour, converting it into energy for electricity and hot water. Sweden has 34 waste-to-energy furnaces and the country makes over 0 million a year importing and burning waste from other countries. “We see it as a kind of recycling”, says Jocke Hook, who works at the Västerås plant. Yet much of the waste burnt is plastic and, as Professor Goran Finnveden explains, “if you incinerate plastic you get carbon dioxide emissions”. Indeed Joan-Marc Simon of Zero Waste Europe believes that the number of incinerators will soon fall. “We’re going to see incinerators closing down in Europe because they’re going to have less waste to burn and recycling is going to go up.”

녹색기업, 친환경 공정으로 주목받다

With fine dust emerging as the country’s biggest concern,… more and more companies in South Korea are going green to minimize their carbon footprint and emissions.
Process innovation and new systems… are helping them conserve energy, reduce pollution, and boost productivity all at the same time.
Yoon Jung-min reports.

In the modern era, companies not only focus on generating profits,… but protecting the natural environment as well.
An auto parts maker in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggido-Province,… is one of the many firms that are now going green.
Last month, its plant was given an award by Korea’s environment minister… for its effort to reduce the creation of harmful substances.

The plant invented a new, automated welding machine… to conserve materials used in the production process.
It also adopted an automated waste management system… to safely handle and minimize waste water.
An energy storage system is used to save up energy overnight,… so that it can be used during the daytime hours.
Since the plant adopted these eco-friendly techniques,… its productivity has risen 32 percent,… while energy consumption decreased by 12 percent compared to 2010.

“Since we adopted the eco-friendly system, output increased in our plant while energy usage decreased. Also, we were able to reduce our amount of pollutant emissions.”

“Eco-friendly management and innovation, not just profits, are becoming more important for sustainable development. By awarding businesses with the green company label, we plan to raise social responsibility in the corporate sector.”

Other companies that have been recognized as green firms include… Korea Midland Power Incheon branch, Korea Southern Power Busan branch, Mando Corporation Iksan plant and a hydro-electric power plant in Cheongsong run by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power.

These companies say businesses should be more responsible for protecting the environment for long-term benefits to our society.
